Somare silent on failed PNG mutiny


There is still no word from Papua New Guinea's ousted prime minister Sir Michael Somare, in spite of a declaration unveiled by his daughter declaring he orchestrated a failed army mutiny.


On Thursday, rebel soldiers took defence pressure commander Brigadier Common Francis Agwi hostage and demanded Sir Michael be reinstated as prime minister.


But afterwards the same day, the commander was freed and the rebels and their leader, previous colonel Yaura Sasa, withdrew to Tarama barracks.


They are nonetheless there, demanding pardons prior to providing up their weapons.


In accordance to a declaration sent by his daughter Betha on Thursday, Sir Michael, 75, admitted purchasing the failed navy mutiny and insisted he was the country's genuine leader.
